When they were researching the effects of porn exposure on young people’s relationships, researchers from Middlesex University concluded:
“We found that children and young people need safe spaces where they can freely discuss the full range of issues related to sex, relationships and the accessibility of online porn in the digital age.”
Our project, ‘Object’, is an innovative way of opening up discussion on this very important topic. It’s something young people are desperate to talk about, but something that adults at school and home can feel out of their depth trying to address.
With ‘Object’, we get young people’s peers involved. Drama college students aged 16-19 perform a thought-provoking play for Year 10 students, and help facilitate open discussion afterwards in safe small groups.
“I thought they were brilliant”
We’re about to take ‘Object’ on another tour around Wokingham schools, in partnership with Bracknell’s Artemis College.
Last term, we partnered for the first time with Read College of performing arts and took ‘Object’ to The Piggott School in Wargrave. Here’s what they thought:
“The feedback was very positive – the students said the leaders made them feel comfortable, were relatable and easy to talk to. They also really enjoyed the performances (I did too – thought they were brilliant!)”
– Head of Year 10, The Piggott School
“They made me feel very comfortable and had good questions to discuss, it helped me a lot to talk about awkward topics with them.”
“The drama students made us feel very comfortable and welcome, they allowed us to talk about anything and were very relatable to our age group.”
“The leaders weren’t judgemental. They listened to everyone and were easy to talk to.”
“100% recommend.”
“… I think we need more of these sessions”
